medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I wondered whether it related to the sort of 'spiritual dryness' that many - including Mother Theresa of Calcutta, apparently, suffer from? Those experiencing it may begin to doubt their faith and thus be seduced away from it?

I read somewhere that Hildegard’s visions could have been a side –effect of migraines. Dehydration, perhaps as a result of fasting, can lead to migraines, and maybe she wondered if in some way these visions were ‘false’.

You might try Victoria Sweet, "Hildegard of Bingen and the Greening of Medieval Medicine", Bulletin of the History of Medicine 73.3 (1999): 381-403. -- Paul

      Greetings all,
I´ve run across a passage referring to the visions of Hildegard of Bingen, which states that while many wondered whether they were from God or 'de inaquositate aeriorum spirituum, qui multos seducant'.
(from Vita S. Hildegardis, ed. Klaes, p. 28)
This was translated as 'from the drying out of airy spirits, who mislead many.'
My question: airy spirits misleading people is not a problem, but I´m intrigued by the 'drying out' part.
How is dryness related to false visions?
      Meg
