Dear AllRe our International Online Symposium - happening NOW!!Congratulations to all who have presented so far - and good luck to ALDinHE's own John Hilsdon, Carina Buckley and Andrea Didier - whose sessions are starting soon:Who are Learning DevelopersJohn HilsdonPlymouth UniversityPresentation Time: 15.00January 28thAbstract:The work of Learning Developers in the UK has emerged over the last fifteen years in the formof a range of practices designed to supplement, support and enhance student learning. Thoseundertaking this work do so under a variety of conditions and contexts in relation toorganisational structure, contracts of employment and orientations to pedagogy. Since 2003,LDers have established a national organisation: the Association for Learning Development inHigher Education (ALDinHE), which holds annual and regional conferences; and (since 2008)publishes the Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education (JLDHE). Almost 1000 LDprofessionals subscribe to the Association’s JISCmail forum. Despite this, data being collectedfor doctoral research involving interviews and observations of LD professionals indicates thatuncertainty over their role, function and identity is a primary characteristic of LDers. This paperseeks to examine this situation and to explore its potential significance for HE more widely.Liking and not liking: Hidden selves and ideal selves when working with studentsCarina BuckleySouthampton Solent UniversityPresentation Time: 16.00January 28thAbstract:Following Hochschild’s 1983 research into emotional labour, in a pressurised service culture, personality and feeling can belong as much to the organisation as to the individual producingthem, thereby risking the alienation of the individual from their feelings. The relation of theseideas to Higher Education has not been extensively explored, particularly with regards tolearning support. In the UK’s current consumerist HE climate, those providing learning support can findthemselves uncomfortably caught between the ideal and the possible. Coupled with theirfrontline position in giving service to students, how do learning support professionals approachtheir world and their feelings?Rich qualitative data from those working in learning development uncovers the complexinterplay between student demands, limited resources and their own emotional energy levels. Inexamining the gap between what is desirable and what is achievable in supporting students, itquestions the emotional cost to those who provide this support.Embedding digital literacies and new technology at the University of East LondonAndrea DidierUniversity of East LondonLondon, UKPresentation Time: 17.00January 28thAbstract:This session reports on a new initiative at the University of East London to improve students'digital literacy. Taking a blended learning approach and providing every first year student with atablet computer, a team of librarians, tutors and learning achievement assistants worked withineach school to produce resources to support students with their digital literacy and their learningskills. Following the success of the scheme it will be extended to encompass more resourcesusing different media, and also work to support those students with additional learning needs.FOLLOW THE EMAIL TRAIL - THERE ARE CONNECTING LINKSAll the best,Sandra---------- Forwarded message ----------

Just to re-iterate Mandy's comments (below). I attended one of the online webinars yesterday evening, and it was a delight to hear some fresh perspectives on PAL/PASS from New Zealand. There was some good text discussion too. The AdobeConnect system was really easy to use.
Sessions re-start from 15.00 UK time today Thursday - 3 from the UK followed by 3 from Canada. Full details at http://www.learningspecialists.ca/events or see Maryann's email below.
This co-founding of the new International Consortium of Academic Language and Learning Developers is just one of the ways ALDinHE is making professional development opportunities available to its members and the wider Learning Development community. It is not too late for your institution to take out membership if you have not yet done so (shameless plug): http://www.aldinhe.ac.uk/index.php?p=2

Really glad to hear you’re enjoying the first (ever!) International online symposium! The UK presentations start this afternoon so do check them out if you can – much friendlier times, of course!
As I understand it, the recordings will be made available to ALDinHE who then in turn will disseminate them more widely. So don’t worry if you miss any, you will be able to see them later!
Best wishes,
Carina

I've managed to catch a couple of these so far and they've been excellent. Unfortunately could quite keep awake for a couple I was interested in very early this morning though . Will the recordings be freely available? I understand the organiser is sending recordings to respective organisers.
