Abstract:

The work of Learning Developers in the UK has emerged over the last fifteen years in the form

of a range of practices designed to supplement, support and enhance student learning. Those

undertaking this work do so under a variety of conditions and contexts in relation to

organisational structure, contracts of employment and orientations to pedagogy. Since 2003,

LDers have established a national organisation: the Association for Learning Development in

Higher Education (ALDinHE), which holds annual and regional conferences; and (since 2008)

publishes the Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education (JLDHE). Almost 1000 LD

professionals subscribe to the Association’s JISCmail forum. Despite this, data being collected

for doctoral research involving interviews and observations of LD professionals indicates that

uncertainty over their role, function and identity is a primary characteristic of LDers. This paper

seeks to examine this situation and to explore its potential significance for HE more widely.

Liking and not liking: Hidden selves and ideal selves when working with students

Abstract:

Following Hochschild’s 1983 research into emotional labour, in a pressurised service culture,

personality and feeling can belong as much to the organisation as to the individual producing

them, thereby risking the alienation of the individual from their feelings. The relation of these

ideas to Higher Education has not been extensively explored, particularly with regards to

learning support.

In the UK’s current consumerist HE climate, those providing learning support can find

themselves uncomfortably caught between the ideal and the possible. Coupled with their

frontline position in giving service to students, how do learning support professionals approach

their world and their feelings?

Rich qualitative data from those working in learning development uncovers the complex

interplay between student demands, limited resources and their own emotional energy levels. In

examining the gap between what is desirable and what is achievable in supporting students, it

questions the emotional cost to those who provide this support.

Embedding digital literacies and new technology at the University of East London

Abstract:

This session reports on a new initiative at the University of East London to improve students'

digital literacy. Taking a blended learning approach and providing every first year student with a

tablet computer, a team of librarians, tutors and learning achievement assistants worked within

each school to produce resources to support students with their digital literacy and their learning

skills. Following the success of the scheme it will be extended to encompass more resources

using different media, and also work to support those students with additional learning needs.

Just to re-iterate Mandy's comments (below). I attended one of the online webinars yesterday evening, and it was a delight to hear some fresh perspectives on PAL/PASS from New Zealand. There was some good text discussion too. The AdobeConnect system was really easy to use.
