italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of our esteemed colleague, Professor Guido Pugliese, a pillar and one of the founding pioneers of Italian Studies at University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM).

In 1968, Guido established the division of Italian Studies at Brock University. In 1975, he joined the then Erindale College where he taught Italian literature, film, theatre and language. Professor Pugliese masterfully combined traditional philology with innovative teaching approaches.  He has lectured at numerous provincial, national and international conferences on Dante, Boccaccio, Conti, Goldoni, Leopardi, Manzoni, Verga and on questions related to pedagogy, especially on the use of theatre as a vehicle for teaching and learning language. He has published articles on most of these authors, and has edited the previously unpublished correspondence of Pietro Ercole Gherardi to Muratori. From 1986 to 1999, together with Professor Salvatore Bancheri and from 2000 onward by the two professors alternatively, he staged Italian theatre performed by UTM students. Professor Pugliese has been the President of the Dante Society of Toronto, President of the Canadian Society for Italian Studies (CSIS), and in 1995 was recognized with the Teaching Excellence Award for Faculty by UTM.

On October 1, 2015, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, colleagues from both side of the Atlantic honoured him with a Festschrift, Studies in Honour of Guido Pugliese, a 398-page volume edited by Anthony Mollica (Soleil, 2015)

On behalf of the Department of Language Studies (UTM), the Department of Italian Studies (UofT) and the University of Toronto, I wish to extend our sincere condolences to his wife, Professor Olga Pugliese, and his family.

His obituary announcement is appended to this message and available online at: http://www.rskane.ca/tribute/details/9438/Guido_Pugliese/obituary.html#tribute-start
