Using Social Media for Evaluation and Feedback:
Analysing Quality of Public Engagement Experience Data from TripAdvisor and Twitter
Tuesday 8th March 2016, 13:00 - 16:45
University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland

THE WORKSHOP

Have you begun thinking about analysing social media for feedback and evaluation about your organisation and its activities? This publicly available source of data can offer great value in terms of gaining insights into the views and experiences of your customers and audiences. However, social media also bring with them specific methodological and practical issues that must be taken into account to gain accurate evaluation results. This workshop presents cutting edge knowledge about such data, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of different options. The event provides practical solutions alongside important ‘health warnings’ about the limitations of this kind of data. This practical workshop offers the following:
  • An introduction to the strengths and limitations of using social media data for public engagement evaluation and feedback.
  • A detailed discussion of Twitter as a source of evaluation and quality of experience data.
  • Examples showing what your organisation can (and can’t) learn from analysing the content of people’s responses on Twitter.
  • How to use TripAdvisor data for evaluation and feedback purposes.

The Speakers:

Andrew Moss

Andrew Moss (Conservation Social Scientist, Chester Zoo) has over a decade of visitor research experience in world zoos and aquariums. He has led over fifty evaluation research projects and has numerous publications, in journals such as Conservation Biology, the Journal of Environmental Education, Visitor Studies and Nature.

Dr Eric Jensen

Dr Eric Jensen (Associate Professor, Sociology Dept, University of Warwick) is a leading social scientist specializing in innovative methods of conducting impact evaluation research. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge and has led many groundbreaking projects on new social research technologies.

Gentle Introduction to Quantitative Public Engagement Evaluation Using Questionnaires and Observation
Wednesday 9th March 2016, 10:30 - 15:30
University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland

THE WORKSHOP

Are you feeling uncertain about how to set up a quantitative evaluation, or looking to explore your options? This workshop presents the state of the art in collecting quantitative public engagement evaluation data, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of different options. This event will include presentations on how to design good questionnaires and observation-based evaluations. We provide practical perspectives from both a practitioner perspective within an informal learning organisation and the perspective of an external evaluator and expert in survey methodology.

This practical workshop offers the following:
  1. An introduction to questionnaire design. This includes how to evaluate existing survey questions and develop new ones for quantitative evaluations.
  2. An introduction to different question types you can use, along with their strengths and weaknesses.
  3. How to collect and quantify open-ended evaluation data such as annotated drawings.
  4. An introduction to visitor tracking, timing and other types of observation-based evaluation and how to set up the tracking and timing evaluation that connects with questionnaire feedback.

The Role of Data and Evaluation in the Cultural and Third Sector

Thursday 10th March 2016, 1pm - 5pm
University of Stirling, Scotland

THE WORKSHOP

The cultural and third sectors are often accused of having a lack of robust data and evaluation to evidence their impact. This workshop explores what types of data these sectors have, the quality of existing evaluation data and what kinds of evaluation data they still need to develop. The workshop questions the current ways of thinking about evaluation and evidence in these sectors, identifying new evaluation options and strategies.

The workshop asks significant questions for the cultural and third sectors including: what is the role of evaluation today? How is evaluation addressed within policy and practice? How can evaluation be improved to better inform practice and policy?

The workshop will explore what needs to be done to generate the evidence needed for practitioners, policymakers and wider stakeholders. The event also reviews current thinking and practices to enable cultural and third sector practitioners to gain a better understanding of expectations and trends in museum, cultural and third sector policy.
