Hi all,

This is interesting, I knew about Beaumanor's important role in WW2 but not that it was a wireless station in WW1. I am a little confused about the Narborough reference though. Was there definitely a WW1 wireless station at Narborough in Leicestershire, or was it at Narborough Aerodrome in Norfolk..?

On another note, the report says:
A wireless station is thought to have been located in the grounds of Beaumanor Hall (OA.2), although its exact location is not known. PastScape states that there is a box of photos and a site plan available (presumably at the local HER or library).

We definitely don't have a box of photos in the HER! I wonder where they are?

Interesting stuff though!

Thanks,

HER Forum members may be interested in a recent research report that is now online.

As part of our support for increasing understanding of the legacy of the First World War, Historic England commissioned a study of First World War wireless stations in England.

First World War Wireless Stations have been little studied from an archaeological or historical perspective and most previous research had been technological in nature. This report, written by Jane Phimester of Oxford Archaeology, broadens our knowledge of this subject and has located a number of sites that had become "lost" to the record, through research using archives, aerial photographs of sites and synthesising secondary sources.

The project also used the CBA home front project recording methodology for its data.

You can now access a free download of this report via the Historic England website.
