Dear GIS-JOBS Subscribers
The issue of insulting hourly rates or wages for those with GIS training has arisen again and I have received some complaints about specific agencies offering hourly rates between the minimum wage and an unskilled worker's wage.
GIS-JOBS is primarily intended for employers to advertise posts directly, without an agent as an intermediary, and some adverts specifically ask for agents not to put candidates forward.
I have always tolerated agents because their adverts give a fuller picture of the GIS jobs market and increase the number of opportunities offered to subscribers. This is despite occasionally having complaints from agents because GIS-JOBS, as a free service for over 20 years, undercuts them!
I do not want to have to start actively moderating GIS-JOBS as that will massively increase the work load and will delay adverts, neither of which should be necessary.
Those making inappropriate postings are removed from the list promptly and thus prevented from posting further ads under that ID.
I will now consider banning agencies that advertise jobs below a certain hourly rate or annual salary, unless the advert makes it clear that these are intern positions that will include a significant element of training and job experience.
I would welcome advice as to how low a wage or hourly rate is too low and whether I should change the current liberal policy of GIS-JOBS.
Please send any advice to me via [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. I do not want GIS-JOBS to be cluttered with another debate on pay and agencies, but I am interested in your views and will read your comments though I will not necessarily respond. I may take 'owners privilege' and summarise the comments I receive to the list if appropriate.

With best wishes
Bob
