Hi Anne Marie,

They can do a level 1 Safeguarding Children course online – it is a simple multiple choice test and I believe is free. That is what our education volunteers are being asked to do. Several years ago myself and a colleague did two day level 2 (I think, maybe level 3) course and the volunteers did a one day level 1 course. The level exceeded what was required in both cases. Recently my colleague and I were placed on a two day advanced safeguarding refresher course and promptly removed by the council running the course as it was not relevant to our position and levels of contact with children. We were told that the level 1 online course was sufficient for our needs.

One the questions you need to ask is “are your volunteers ever going to be in the sole charge of a groups of children” – even briefly whilst the accompanying adult takes one child to the loo. If yes then find an online course.

I hope this helps. I could probably find the link to the online course if necessary.

Subject: Safeguarding Training for heritage site

Dear GEM,

I have been tasked with arranging safe guarding training for a group of volunteer tour guides working in a church.  We have very few school groups visit us and on the rare occasions children visit they are accompanied by adults.

That said I think that safeguarding training would be very valuable.  However I think that the kind of training necessary for school teachers might frighten them off and not be so relevant as schools are quite different environmentsl with different obligations.

We have a safeguarding trainer locally who is highly recommended but she is very busy and only has time to deliver her fixed workshop which is schools focussed.

My question to folks out there is do you know of a qualified safeguarding trainer who would be able to advise on the development of a policy and deliver training suitable to volunteers at a heritage site ?

All the best,
