Northwestern University Center for Forced Migration Studies Summer Institute: Refugee Protection and the Rights and Process of (Re)Settlement, August 7-13, 2016 Apply Online: http://bit.ly/Si2016registration The Northwestern Center for Forced Migration Studies at the Buffett Institute for Global Studies (CFMS) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for our 2016 Summer Institute: Refugee Protection and the Rights and Process of (Re)Settlement, August 7-13, 2016. The 2016 Summer Institute introduces participants to the resettlement process from identification and classification of refugee status to resettlement in a secondary country, with a particular focus on the United States. The week-long course begins by putting the U.S. Resettlement program in the broader framework of refugee protection and introduces students to local contexts of refugee settlement in the Global South. Through lectures, workshops and experiential learning, students will learn about transitions from host to (re)settlement country and then focus on aspects of the U.S. resettlement program including how resettlement makes use of mainstream local, state, and federal programs, short and long term impact of integration on the host community and the refugees who resettle, how resettled refugees contribute to their social networks, ways in which resettlement change the country of origin, challenges of resettlement, comparative models of resettlement and how resettlement policy impacts practice, among others. Students will have a chance to learn how to apply human-centered design to resettlement challenges through an innovative Design for America workshop. The CFMS Summer Institute is an intensive, rigorous seven-day, non-degree earning certificate program. Held at Northwestern University's beautiful lakeside campus in Evanston, IL, the Summer Institute provides a forum to exchange ideas, build relationships, develop new approaches and policy recommendations and learn about new developments in the field. Past participants have included government officials, non-governmental organization personnel, university faculty and graduate students (select advanced undergraduate students may seek permission to attend). 2016 Faculty include: Galya Ruffer (CFMS Director), Jessica Darrow (University of Chicago), Faith Nibbs (University of Texas at Austin), Anita Fabos (Clark University), Dianna Shandy (Macalester College), Shana Wills (DePaul University), Tyler Miller (University of Illinois at Chicago), Kimberly Seibel (Northwestern University), Paul Stein (Former State Refugee Coordinator, Colorado) and representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the United States office of Populations, Refugees and Migration, the Office of Refugee Resettlement and local resettlement agencies.
