If anyone is interested - I tweeted about this briefly yesterday : https://twitter.com/socmerrill/status/691645278257090560

And mentioned it at the end of my most recent blog post (written after brief reflection at midnight yesterday!): http://samuelmerrill.com/2016/01/26/bodies-on-beaches-john-akomfrahs-vertigo-sea/

Thoughts welcome!

In case anyone's still collecting examples of contemp' hist' graffiti, just spotted 'Fukushima' graffitied on one of the sperm whales washed up on a beach in Lincolnshire.

Interesting to see how fondly some people remember graffiti. This reminded me of the seminal “Marples must go” on the M1, the ghost of which kept reappearing despite attempts to paint over it. A quick search shows I’m not alone: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=141&t=621237&mid=0&i=0&nmt=Give Peas A Chance&mid=0 .
My own favourite is “Pulchra semper” by Kingsgate Bridge in Durham.  Painted around 1972 in response to the desecration of the street with yellow lines. The lines have gone, but the slogan is still there.

Subject: Draft Historic England guidance on recording historic graffiti now out for consultation

We'd like to get your views on all elements of the draft Historic England guidance on Recording Historic Graffiti.

Its purpose is to provide anyone working in the historic environment with basic advice and guidance for the systematic recording of graffiti of all types and ages.

It aims to introduce:

·         the range and types of graffiti

·         provide practical advice on recording techniques

·         give some indication as to the range of information that can be learnt.

We've created a comments form to help capture your thoughts. Please send your feedback by Friday 5 February 2016, using this form if you wish, to Marcus Jecock

You can see the draft guidance and access the comments form on the Historic England website:

http://www.historicengland.org.uk/about/what-we-do/consultations/guidance-open-for-consultation/

I know there was much comment on the list relating to a recent magazine article about graffiti, particularly concerns about references for further reading. Please do feel free to reinforce this for this guidance- as well as any other comments- directly to the contact above! (I note for example that this draft does not yet appear to cite the full academic reference for the seminal paper on the Sex Pistols graffiti).

Kind regards

Robin
