Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships at the Institute for German Studies

The Institute for German Studies at the University of Birmingham is keen to support applications to the 2016 Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships scheme from outstanding postdoctoral scholars, where there is a clear research link to German Studies at the University of Birmingham.

Established in 1994 as a partnership between the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the University of Birmingham, the Institute for German Studies is part of an active network of eighteen similar centres in the USA, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Israel, China, Japan and Korea. The research activities of the IGS are diverse and cross-disciplinary, encompassing the culture, history, politics and economics of contemporary Germany in its European context. The Institute also co-operates closely with German Studies within the Department of Modern Languages. Colleagues in the German Section have research interests in German and Austrian literature, culture and society from the medieval period to the twenty-first century, with particular expertise in translation studies, cross-cultural exchange, German film, intellectual history, history and memory of war and political violence, post-socialism, gender, and foreign-language pedagogy.

For further information on our research culture, including our areas of specialism, major research projects and grants, conferences and research seminars, please visit: http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/institute-german-studies/research/index.aspx

A central part of the IGS’s mission is to support postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers by bringing them together with experienced scholars and international thinkers on Germany and Europe, and by strengthening their experience of research and teaching in an academic community of established and early career scholars working in similar fields, in order to develop their curriculum vitae and improve their prospects of obtaining permanent lecturing posts.

We would be delighted to offer support and advice to early career researchers working in relevant subject areas, who wish to apply to the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships scheme.

Initial enquiries can be directed to Dr Sara Jones ([log in to unmask]).

Details of the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships Scheme, including eligibility criteria, can be found here: https://www.leverhulme.ac.uk/funding/grant-schemes/early-career-fellowships

Please note that candidates must be within 5 years of award of their PhD (calculated from date of viva examination). Applicants must either hold a degree from a UK higher education institution at the time of taking up the Fellowship or at the time of the application deadline must hold an academic position in the UK (e.g. fixed-term lectureship, fellowship). Applicants must not have previously held a permanent academic post at any time in their career. Given the highly competitive nature of the scheme, we would normally expect applicants to have passed their viva and to have at least two high-quality publications.

The deadline for applying for University of Birmingham approval (which must be sought before the application can be submitted to the Leverhulme Trust) is 25 January 2016. The application deadline for the scheme itself will be 10 March 2016. Applicants interested in applying through the Institute for German Studies should send an up-to-date CV (with date of doctoral viva) and 1-page outline of the proposed research to Dr Sara Jones ([log in to unmask]) by 11 January 2016.
