Hi Deborah,

At the British Geological Survey we have major holdings of rocks, fossils, borehole samples and a few minerals from the Avon area.

These are included in our various online databases, for example:
Rocks & Minerals (Britrocks) http://www.bgs.ac.uk/data/britrocks/britrocks.cfc?method=searchBritrocks
Fossils (PalaeoSaurus) http://www.bgs.ac.uk/palaeosaurus/
Borehole Samples http://www.bgs.ac.uk/data/bmd/home.html?

However, our GIS system (GeoIndex - http://mapapps2.bgs.ac.uk/geoindex/home.html ) brings most of this together into a simple map-based system:

All the black triangles, for example, link to rock samples with online thin sections – e.g. http://www.largeimages.bgs.ac.uk/iip/britrocks.html?id=370000/374648

Subject: Geological material from the Avon area

Hi all,

I’m currently involved in putting together a book looking at the geology/RIGS sites of the Avon area. As part of this I’d be really interested to know what institutions out there have geological material from the old Avon area. Rocks, fossils, minerals… anything else geological you might have?

I’d be grateful to hear what is out there - just a rough idea of what you have, I’m not looking for too much detail (unless you have if of course!).

Please reply off list to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Many thanks and Merry Christmas.
