Research suggests that the ability to use natural resources and the type of activities carried out ('active' e.g. walking, or 'passive' e.g. painting) may vary with gender and social class. However, the relationships between use, ownership and the promotion of environmental resources, and the adoption of health-related sustainable practices within the natural environment are unclear. This PhD, in partnership with the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and National Parks Wales, aims to explore (1) the relationships between gender and use of the natural environment for health; (2) how policy (including the Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015) and practice, is influencing gendered understandings, ownership and health-related activities. The Brecon Beacons National Park and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park will be used as case studies. The mixed method approach will be applied to integrate quantitative data (visitor survey) and qualitative data collected through ethnographic interviews with key stakeholders.

This award is 1+3. A 1+3 studentship provides funding for four years, completing the MSc in Social Science Research methods in the 1st year, followed by 3 years research funding for a PhD.
