medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Is this a one-off or does the chronicle use this expression several times at some considerable remove from each other? If the latter, then it _might_ have something to do to with the day or days of a recurring feast. If the former, then perhaps the reference is to a particular benediction previously referred to. For example Gervase of Canterbury uses _tempore benedictionis_ ("at the time of the blessing") to indicate the time at which a royal wedding he has just discussed took place. See his _Gesta regum continuata_, at the year 1299, in Stubbs, ed., _The Historical Works of Gervase of Canterbury_, II, 317 <http://tinyurl.com/ht63o9d>.

On the other hand, _in tempore benedictionis_ can have an eschatological significance, referring to the end time. See Rupert of Deutz, _Commentaria in Apocalypsim_, IX, 14: "in plenitudine temporis, in tempore benedictionis, quando verus agnus Christus semen Abrahae, in quo benedicerentur omnes gentes, immolandus erat in ara crucis" <http://tinyurl.com/pnm8b2a> or <http://tinyurl.com/jlmf57c>. Not a likely referent in the case of something that's already happened, obviously, but worth keeping in mind as a synonym for "in the fullness of time" used sarcastically.

Best,

John Dillon

Would Palm Sunday seem likely? As in, 'Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini'?

O learned ones,

If a chronicle were to say something happened "around the date of the benediction" in the city of X, what would that mean. What benediction?

DuCange isn't helping very much on this one...

Humbly,

cecilia
