Hi Lesley and Pete,

Just to add to the discussion, Lesley’s example is indexed on the Unified Designation System as Late C17 Farm Labourers Cottage and Timber Framed Building, with Garage as later phase.

Cheers,

Petra

Hi Pete,

This probably isn’t much help but… we have a Listed ‘Paddy’s hut’ in Greater Manchester:

http://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1067886

‘Garage, at one time used as Irish farm labourers' sleeping quarters.’

The HER entry records Mon types of ‘hut’ and ‘garage’, suggesting a lack of precise terms in the Thesaurus.

Best wishes,

Lesley

Subject: Friday (OK Weds Before Christmas) Question

Hi there,

Can anyone suggest a thesaurus term for a building used for temporary or seasonal agricultural workers' accommodation?  The term used in the report is a 'Paddy Shant' but whilst there is 'Agricultural Workers Dwelling' available in HBSMR/FISH, this implies a permanent residence, not short-term accommodation for harvest workers etc.  Likewise there is a term for a temporary worker's settlement for e.g. building a canal, railway or reservoir, but this is a 'camp' not a single building on a farmstead.

Presumably the 'Paddy' element relates to the employment of itinerant Irish workers here in the NW.  I've also heard these referred to as 'Paddy Houses' and 'Potato Houses'.
