I have approached HE about the MCDs, and was told generically that they are being replaced by the Introduction to Heritage Assets (IHA) series, so people should use them in preference.

However, having access to those MCDs which have not yet been updated (such as Hlaew’s) would be useful until the relevant IHA comes out, and I have suggested that.

Best wishes

These Monument Class Descriptions would be very helpful, even though they are a few years old. I also can’t find them anywhere on the Historic England web site.

It’d be really helpful if they were properly digitally archived so they are accessible in the future. The only suitable digital archive in the UK for digital archaeology data is the Archaeology Data Service, so they’d be best-placed to hold this information. (A link to the digital archives could then go on the Historic England website). Would this be possible?

Best regards,

Graham

There were a range of these Monument Class Descriptions available on the old EH site, under the Monuments protection Programme section.  These were the early batches of MCDs and do not include the Industrial descriptions or step reports (which were also useful).  I had to discard my paper copies during an office move, but found them a useful reference.

I've not found them on the new HE site – perhaps someone there could let us know where they were moved to?

Good point Chris. If they are useful, could/should they not be available online, e.g. From FISH? It is always useful to be able to access legacy data standards as they tend to be present in datasets long after their official lifespan.
We can put something on the hbsmr documentation website if that would help.

Crispin,

I suspect that Nick is/was after the old MPP description.

Although MPP past away a while ago the MPP descriptions, where they were produced (and many never were) are very useful.

Hi folks

I am trying to get sight of a copy of the old Monument Class description for a Hlaew (think that’s spelled right), but they disappeared offline when EH became HE, I think.

Does anyone have a hard copy they might be willing to scan and email me off list please?
