Children and young people may spend time and interact each week across a variety of multilingual settings, including preschool, childcare, school, after school clubs, sporting clubs and in community
activities, as well as interacting in virtual spaces and with social media. It is not well understood how children and young people initiate and maintain peer interaction or how they make friends in such settings marked by linguistic diversity. This
special volume will bring together research from across the globe, and various methodological and theoretical orientations to investigate
Papers presented in this proposed special volume seek to discover the intricacies of friendship and peer cultures of children in multilingual settings. This special volume comes at a time when,
internationally, the linguistic diversity of communities in the minority world, is at its highest to date. Diversity and cultural competence are valued in quality programs for children and youth, and there is more to learn of how children and young people
in multilingual settings initiate and maintain peer interaction, and how they make friends. children’s relationships within the multilingual settings such as school, home, community and online.
