What were the circumstances of the first 100 children to be cared for in 1882 by The Children's Society (the Waifs and Strays Society as
it was then known)? There were children found sleeping rough in London, children working as crossing sweepers, in the sewers, and members of the shoe-black brigade. There were children born into sheer poverty, and difficult homes where alcohol abuse was evident.
