On the other hand , new rules for European research money  have "forced" research units to consider outreach work as an integral part of research leading to the emergence of many new sc comm positions. Oxford university, for example,  has open more than a dozen since the beginning of the year (with most positions I saw paying less than £30K…).

Hi all

I would say that that sort of salary feels about right in the current “market” for these sorts of jobs.

Which makes me think… I agree with Michael that salaries are lower (relatively) now than 10-15 years ago. My GCSE level understanding of economics suggests there’s an interesting question to do with supply and demand: since that time, it feels like there has been a significant increase in the number of people trying to get into these sorts of fields, without a corresponding increase in the number of jobs to go round. So we would expect salaries to be relatively depressed (cf discussions about unpaid internships).

Yours sixth-form-ishly

Dom

Starting Associate Editor salaries at Nature the magazine might be 34k (I don't really know) but at some other Nature-branded journals and at some journals in other companies they are much lower. Becoming an editor after doing a postdoc often means getting a pay cut.

Good question, Mike.

The job description and person specification closely matches that of my job with the Graphene Flagship. That is a Cambridge university grade 8 position on the academic-related scale, with a salary of between 38k and 46k.

As an aside, I'm told that the current starting salary for an associate editor at Nature is 34k. Such jobs tend to go to fresh postdocs with little or no journalistic or other comms experience.

As for responsibility, this may or may not have anything to do with job titles, or the management of people and resources. People who create should be rewarded appropriately. It is a strong incentive to excel.

What pay would you expect for that job?

That’s a serious question. I despair at the salaries I see out there. I may be seriously out of touch, but these look like numbers I saw a decade or more ago.

To save people from clicking the link:

£28,384 to £30,545 (dependent upon qualifications and experience)

Interestingly, it concentrates on communications skills and experience rather than bits of paper and a demand for  PhD, for example.

I see that the Rutherford Lab in Didcot is looking for a science writer...

The work would surely be interesting for a physical sciences specialist, but the pay is poor, given the level of experience sought.
