Dear colleagues,

Many thanks for you advice on this matter. I feel that there may be scope here for a project to provide an handbook for the purposes of advising staff when they find themselves in sticky situations.

Many thanks,

Stephen

Hi Stephen,
Providing advice on how to handle plagiarism accusations can indeed be tricky. I absolutely agree with Gill Price that by a) being honest about errors and/or omissions in acknowledging other people’s work and b) explaining how the work was done, the academic in question should be able to at least partly ensure a fair outcome of the case.
My experience as a forensic linguist, though, is that we are often rather naive when it comes to assuming that by being honest all will end well. In fact,  this frequently leads to cases of misrepresentation of evidence, in which fairly or unfairly those accused fail to prove their honesty. I would therefore recommend that the academic at stake should seek for expert advice.
Best
Rui

Dear Stephen

I don’t know of any advice system for academics I'm afraid, but I do strongly believe that academic staff should observe all the principles and practices that we expect of students.

Accordingly, I would advise an academic in the same way as a student who is being accused of plagiarism:
1) Be honest about any errors or omissions in acknowledging others, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and show awareness of the implications of these
2) Explain how construction of the work in question was done, with any evidence that can be mustered, to show your own intellectual ownership of the work

Best wishes
Gill Price
