Hi all

I left Cilip many years ago(after many many years membership) for the same reason as a number of other people have expressed along the line of fiddling while Rome burns etc, agonising over a new name etc etc.

And, I am in no way being sycophantic (not usually my style) when I say I feel it is  the SCL are the ones who have done a lot of key and effective advocacy work for libraries over recent years.

It seems people may after all be interested in the views of people who were in Cilip once  but left.

Please note these are my own views, not my authority's done on my personal email, sent in my own time!

Have a nice day

Alan

This response is to you all, but also to Mr Poole, and the Board of trustees etc.

Well said Steve, and of course Helen. Both of you are I think two of many who feel this way. Nick Poole, please take note. (a number of responses have been just to me, fear of having their views on show as to how it may react badly on them). I understand from others (But not yet seen for myself), you are doing a good job and understand the situation, but I am sure there are large numbers of librarians who feel as Helen and Steve do, and it is in your interest, Cilip, and the profession as a whole, that Cilip starts to listen, learn and act before it is too late. The Major Committee of trustees need to have a re think about their priorities, and what it is people now in the profession, or likely to join, actually need to support and retain them. Too often of late the Board has taken up things which have not only been unpopular, but also disastrous to the profession and the Association. For me, it doesn’t really matter, I had a good career, and because I had other qualifications,  was able to get good jobs, excellent experience on Boards of Directors and as Trustees and Chairman of many committees and Trusts etc., (and still am at almost 73), but none of this really was due to Cilip or my Cilip/librarianship qualifications. (No one knowns what it is, honestly. Having a degree and an MBA was much more important)

I don’t think re-validation will help those in public libraries, and Cilip has to be more proactive, vocal and supportive to the profession and, at this specific time, those trying to pursue and retain a profession in public libraries.

As the saying goes 'Cilip, wake up and smell the coffee'!! before it is too late!!

Now I could have stood as a trustee, and said all this to your faces, BUT, I suspect the response would have been overwhelmingly against me. (I was on the Board once for a while, when it was too big to manage, but I chaired a number of things, including a National committee,  and the Publications committee, so do have a bit of a clue!!)

This is a brilliant summation, couldn't have put it better myself!
I am still a member of CILIP [though I have little idea why] and Chair of EMYLG...but I have never felt so distant from my own professional body.

I stopped being a member of Cilip many years ago and have seen nothing at all recently to inspire me to rejoin.  The absence of support, leadership and general help for public libraries in a state of crisis is lamentable .  Fussing about names, revalidation and other things are fiddling while Rome burns - the profession is being whittled away by current events and CILIP doesn't seem willing to engage with it at all.

I think that these two postings probably cover the range of views regarding revalidation that are held by CILIP members.

For me CPD is an essential part of being a professional and my view on revalidation firmed up following my discussions with CILIP members around the UK - especially new professionals who are immensely proud of being a chartered librarian.  They argued that they had worked hard for the qualification, and they were keen to ensure that it maintained its value in the ever changing workplace.  They saw the importance that other professions placed on revalidation as a public commitment to maintaining the currency of their skills, and they could not see why any professional librarian would not wish to do the same.  They also argued that without revalidation it would be harder to get employers to be serious about the importance of the qualification and the skills it represented.

As a point of clarification for CILIP members, for revalidation CPD does not just mean - or even require! - attendance at conferences.  We are all aware that cost is an issue and so CPD covers any and all the activities which add to your professional knowledge and skills.  These can include reading, different practical and work experiences, on the job training, attending group and regional network meetings - anything that has added to or supported your professional skills. For further information on revalidation follow the link included in the email on voting.

Whatever your views, its your vote - please use it!

Lynne - thanks for your contribution to the discussion and I wish you all the best in finding a new professional post.

Chair, CILIP Board
