The Department of German at King’s College London is seeking to appoint a full-time, fixed-term Teaching Fellow in German (maternity cover) who will contribute to the teaching and administration of the German Department. The successful candidate will have specific responsibility for undergraduate modules covering topics in 20th century and contemporary German-language literature and film, memory studies, cultural studies, and critical and cultural theory, as well as for elements of translation teaching (German to English). They will be a key member of a Department that is distinguished by its commitment to excellence in research-led teaching across a wide range of fields, from the Medieval Period to the present day, with notable strengths in Literary, Film and Cultural Studies, alongside Comparative Literature, Politics, History and Intellectual History. The Department itself is based in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, one of the most prestigious faculties of its kind, with all its departments regularly ranked in the top ten in the UK, with most departments also regularly ranking in the top three nationally.

Specifically, the successful candidate will teach and have responsibility for two popular modules which cover topics in 20th century and contemporary German-language literature and film, memory studies, cultural studies, and critical and cultural theory. These modules are “5AAGB502: Berlin: Past and Present” (second year level) and “6AAGB621: Writing in Tongues: Literature and Migration in the Modern German Context” (final year level). In addition, the post holder may also supervise a number of Year Abroad essays and portfolios, as well as supervise a small number of final year undergraduate dissertations on the module “6AAGC201: Dissertation”. The post holder will also lead a number of seminar workshops and individual supervisions in German to English translation for final year students, on the module “6AAGLC02 Translation From and Into German III”. The successful candidate will also undertake administrative duties including: module assessment (including first and second marking), module convening, postgraduate training support, personal tutoring (a pastoral role), admissions events, and elements of curriculum development.

Applicants will have completed (or be near the completion of) a PhD in German Studies or a related discipline with a Germanic focus, with a proven ability in teaching topics in German-language literature and culture at undergraduate level. They should have an advanced knowledge of Germanic culture, especially in the modern and contemporary periods, and ideally the ability to teach German to English translation. Relevant experience in aspects of academic administration is also desirable.
