Dear Zooarchs, Unfortunately, I need to clarify about the giraffe bone that was found in Pompeii. We had the bone independently dated by two radiocarbon labs this year, and both identified the bone as modern. It remains an interesting mystery how a modern giraffe bone got into the site, but the bone is definitely not Roman. The date and a brief description of the sample are forthcoming in *Archaeometry*.
