medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

My wife notice the bit about being paraded around in women's clothing as a
form of humiliation. It's a curious detail. I'm wondering if anyone has any
thoughts on it. Even though I'm inclined to take it at more or less face
value in terms of public humiliation tied in with Greco-Roman misogyny and
ideas of sexuality, it did occur to me as we were talking about it last
night: could it be "code" in a sense of Sergius and Bacchus being forced to
serve as prostitutes or something like that?
