Barbara, RDA offers a number of approaches to capitalization, so the practice will vary according to the source of the record and the nature of the resource. RDA 1.7 Transcription provides general guidance. You can follow the instructions in Appendix A, but There are two alternatives: 1) you can opt to create your own guidelines or follow a published style manuals 2) you can accept data without modification if – re-using a description created by another agency OR using data derived from a digital source My personal view is that cataloguers have much more important things to do than tinker with punctuation, so I would accept what you get unless it is clearly wrong (i.e. misrepresents the resource). Alan From: Bibliographic standards in UK libraries [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Barbara Thompson Sent: 01 October 2015 15:08 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: RDA capitalization Hello We (University of Sheffield) aren't yet cataloguing our resources using RDA, but if we import an RDA record we do use it. Recently we've noted that, especially in the 245 field, capitalization seems to be used (eg The Oxford Dictionary of Nursing or Essential Cataloguing) We've checked the RDA toolkit and can't find any reference to this, so have been editing the records (The Oxford dictionary of nursing ; Essential cataloguing). What are other libraries doing and what is the standard? Any advice gratefully received Many thanks, Barbara -- Barbara Thompson Metadata and Discovery Section, Western Bank Library University of Sheffield Sheffield S10 2TN Tel (direct line) : +44 (0)114 2220533 ****************************************************************************************************************** Experience the British Library online at www.bl.uk<http://www.bl.uk/> The British Library’s latest Annual Report and Accounts : www.bl.uk/aboutus/annrep/index.html<http://www.bl.uk/aboutus/annrep/index.html> Help the British Library conserve the world's knowledge.
