Dear all,

You may already be aware but Historic England has now published the 2015 Heritage at Risk Register. The Register is a list of those designated sites known to be at risk from neglect, decay or inappropriate development. A third of the sites that were listed on the 2010 Register have now been rescued – beating Historic England’s national target. Several list members have been involved in work to rescue these sites.

For the first time work has been done to look at the  types of site that are listed on the Register. Barrows have been found to be the most at risk category making up 15.6% of the Register (853). The most common threat to barrows is from farming but overgrown plants and shrubs and burrowing animals also cause problems. Since 2014, 150 barrows have been rescued and taken off the Register.

The next two most common types of site on the Register are:-

·         Residential buildings, which includes everything from prehistoric huts and roundhouses to Roman Villas to Georgian Town houses – 6.6% of the Register (360)

·         Settlements i.e. small concentrations of dwellings such as deserted medieval villages – 6.4% of the Register (352)

The types of site most at risk vary between regions. In the North West commercial sites (i.e. shops, showrooms, marketplaces, warehouses, guildhalls etc.) are most at risk. In the South East it is coastal defence sites that are most at risk. In the West Midlands it is castles that occur most frequently whereas in London is it commemorative monuments.

You can search the register online at http://risk.historicengland.org.uk/register.aspx or access the PDF reports (by region) at http://www.historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/har-2015-registers/ . Spatial data is also available as a data download at https://services.historicengland.org.uk/NMRDataDownload/ (although you will need to register for an account if you don’t already have one).
