Dear list members,

An itinerant exhibition on "Germany's Confrontation with the Holocaust in a Global Context", an AHRC-funded project led by Prof. Stuart Taberner of Leeds University, is now on show in Newcastle's City Library (until 22 November); it also features some additional panels on children and the Holocaust (curated by Dr Beate Müller).

The library's address is 33 New Bridge Street West, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8AX. Opening hours: Monday to Thursday: 8.30am - 8pm; Friday: 8:30am - 5:30pm; Saturday:

9.30am - 5.30pm; Sunday: 11am - 5pm.

The programme of events surrounding the exhibition includes:

1. A public talk by Dr Beate Müller (Newcastle University): "Between Adventures and Air Raids: How Nuremberg's School Children Remembered the Hitler Years in 1946".

In 1946, Nuremberg's schools inspector Otto Barthel had local school children write essays on their wartime experiences. They were also asked to fill in questionnaires which specifically addressed political attitudes of the young. About 3,000 pupils submitted their work. These texts tell a complex story about the thoughts and feelings of German adolescents in the early postwar period, demonstrating the ideological influence of National Socialism, trauma suffered during the war, as well as the shock, frustration, and desorientation after the collapse of the Third Reich.

This talk will focus on identifying the coping strategies of the young in their attempts to make sense of their extreme experiences and of the radical ideological reorientation necessitated in the occupational period.

The event is free, but please register on Eventbrite at http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/germanys-confrontation-with-the-holocaust-in-a-global-context-tickets-18951409175
