Subject: Friday afternoon debate - Museum education in the 21st century

Hello all,

We have been having a debate in the office this morning about what education in museums and cultural organisations should look like in the 21st century so we thought it might help to see what others think.

So...

* What do you think museum/cultural education should look like in the 21st century?
Feeding up to governance what local communities need. Feeding down, suitably translated and packaged, to those we serve, the learning that governance requires us to deliver.

* What are the core principles that museums and cultural organisations should never lose or forget in relation to education?
The narrative and intellectual capital that drive service delivery are generated by the curatorial function. Forget that at the risk of running out of steam/wind/motive power, whatever. Poop, poop!

* How are museums/cultural organisations being innovative? Any best practice examples of really innovate and high quality education offers and programmes would be great.
Centre de la Prehistoire, Vendee, France, loads of excellent demonstrations by experts. Kind of old fashioned but it works.

I am happy to condense responses and share with others if you have been having similar debates in your organisations.

All the best.
