The appointment will be available from 1st January 2016 or, as soon as possible thereafter
Salary will be at a level commensurate with the academic standing of the appointee, and will include £2,919 London Allowance per annum.

The UCL Institute of Education is a world-leading centre for research and teaching in social science and education. In both the 2014 and 2015 QS World University Rankings, the Institute was ranked number one for education worldwide. It was shortlisted for the 'University of the Year' title in the 2014 Times Higher Education (THE) awards. In January 2014, the Institute secured 'outstanding' grades from Ofsted on every criterion for its initial teacher training across primary, secondary and further education programme.  In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, 94% of the Institute's research was judged to be world class. Founded in 1902, the Institute currently has more than 8,000 students and 800 staff, and attracts students from over a hundred countries around the world. The creation of a new Department of Social Science in UCL-IOE is a significant milestone and heralds a stimulating period of strategic growth. Building on world-leading multidisciplinary research across the Departments of Childhood, Families and Health and Quantitative Social Science the new department will become one of the largest centres of excellence in social science teaching and research in London and internationally.


You will have a distinguished international reputation for published scholarly research in social science, a proven commitment to multidisciplinary working, and the ability to promote and co-ordinate multidisciplinary research and teaching. You will have a proven ability to attract major research funding and lead major projects effectively.

A leading academic and a clear strategic thinker, you will command a high level of credibility with the social science academic community. As an imaginative and innovative leader, you will also be a decisive and diplomatic communicator, with the ability to inspire others.  You will will serve as Head of the Department for an initial term of five years. In this role you will provide inspirational and strategic leadership for the development of the new Department, encouraging the highest quality research and ensuring development of the Department's teaching portfolio.
