Doug Millard on Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age
Doug Millard is Senior Curator on the Science Museum’s major new exhibition
on the history of the Soviet space programme, which opened last week. The
exhibition shows how Russia turned the dream of space travel into a reality
and became the first nation to explore space. It looks at the historical,
cultural and spiritual context of Russian space travel, and includes the
most significant collection of Russian spacecraft and artefacts ever to be
shown in the UK. The event is timed to coincide with World Space Week which
marks the anniversary of the launch of Sputnik 1, the world’s first
artificial satellite, by the USSR in October 1957. Please note: Normal
entrance fees apply (SCRSS members £3.00 / non-members £5.00). The SCRSS
centre is located at the corner of Brixton Road with Wynne Road. Nearest
underground stations: Brixton (Victoria line), Oval (Northern line). Buses:
3, 59, 133, 159, 415 (Loughborough Road stop)
