I think anything less than a confidentiality agreement and appropriate training for the type of data they are likely to access would be non-compliant. The organisation chooses to use volunteers, and so has to ensure that they are as property briefed and supervised as a member of staff.

Here's a Tuesday afternoon question for the collective. 
How do you treat volunteers from an information governance perspective as they are not employees with a contract etc. Do you allow them access to a device/system login/ email account and if so how do you control information security? Do they sign an acceptable use policy to agree to certain standards? 
Any pointers would be gratefully received.
