Call for papers for the Association of American Geographers (AAG), Annual Meeting, March 29 - April 2, 2016, San Francisco


Session title: Environments and sport participation



Organizer: Ineke Deelen (Utrecht University)



This session seeks to bring together diverse work of scholars that focus on sports and exercise from a geographical perspective. We are interested in papers that draw on or contribute to geographical concepts, theories or methods (both quantitative or qualitative) to understand sports and exercise at an individual level, which are taking into account the importance of the geographical environment for sports.



Contributions can include, but are not limited to:

*         Use, function, meaning of spaces where sports activities are practiced

*         Influence of attributes of the geographical environment (access to facilities, public space, proximity, safety) or neighborhood characteristics on sports or exercise participation

*         Constraints and motivations that stimulate or hinder participation in sports or exercise

*         Experiences of athletes related to sport participation or use of spaces

*         Technologies in measuring and mapping sport or exercise activities or the experience of sport

*         Importance of planning, design of spaces for sports



Please submit a title and abstract of maximum 250 words to Ineke Deelen ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by October 19, 2015. Participants will be contacted before October 23, 2015 and will be expected to pay and register online at the AAG website by October 29, 2015.
