Dear Bernhard, I have found Hyclone SFM4 insect from Thermo Fisher same as SF900 III SFM from Gibco. The good thing is that powder is also available and it is much cheaper than the liquid media. https://promo.gelifesciences.com/gl/hyclone/product/hyclone-sfm4insect-media.html Cheers, Ale Alessandra Beltrami, Ph.D. Nanyang Technological University Institute of Structural Biology Proteos 07-08B 61 Biopolis Drive Singapore 138673 Phone: (+65) 6586-9690 Fax: (+65) 6791-3856 [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> On 6 Oct 2015, at 7:00 pm, Bernhard Rupp (Hofkristallrat a.D.) <[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>> wrote: Dear Lepidopteranites, I wonder if someone could educate me whether it is meaningful to produce insect cell media in-house. My fellows found the SF900 III medium optimal for our glycoprotein, but yields are still modest and bankruptcy is near. I found this review and compilation http://link.springer.com/protocol/10.1007%2F978-1-59745-457-5_8 SF900 III SFM is a “optimized low-hydrolysate, serum-free, protein-free, animal origin–free insect cell culture medium” but as the review states: “The lack of information concerning the detailed composition of commercial serum-free media is often a limitation“. No kidding. Does anyone have experience/feasibility to share? It seems quite elaborate, but might still be cost effective over time.
