This PhD studentship will examine the origin, context, and impact of strategic system-level health planning and policy in Nigeria in the late colonial (post-World War Two) and post-Independence periods. The project will assess the emergence and salience of health systems thinking and policy throughout this period. Key considerations include the role of British Colonial Development and Welfare planning, emerging regional and federal health planning apparatus within Nigeria, and Nigerian interaction with international public health planning instruments. Through a combination of archival sources, oral historical material, and published government and NGO documentation, the project will trace the emergence of Nigerian discourse on health systems planning in relation to the politics of independence, of regionalism and federalism, of development, and of military and civilian rule.
