Senior Research Associate

Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University

Salary: £32,277 to £37,394 (Grade 7)

Closing Date: Monday 12th October

We seek to appoint a Senior Research Associate at the Lancaster Environment Centre to work on a NERC-funded project "Quantifying and Reducing Uncertainty in the Processes Controlling Tropospheric Ozone and OH".

Current global atmospheric chemistry-climate models are not able to realistically represent the long-term changes in tropospheric composition that are important for determining the impacts of anthropogenic activities on regional air quality or global climate. This project will apply a range of statistical approaches and uncertainty analysis to these models, allowing us to quantify the importance of different processes, explain the diversity in model assessments of past and future atmospheric composition change, and attribute observed changes to specific causes. The project involves national and international collaborators and will inform future international assessments of atmospheric composition and climate, such as those of the IPCC.

You should have (or be about to complete) a Ph.D. in atmospheric modelling, applied statistics, or a related quantitative discipline. You should have experience in developing and running numerical models and/or in model emulation and data analysis. Experience evaluating models against complex observational data sets would be an advantage. You will require good communication skills and should be happy working in a cross-disciplinary environment that involves both atmospheric chemistry modelling and statistical methods. You will be expected to present results at national and international meetings and to write up results for publications in leading scientific journals.

This is a fixed term post for up to 36 months starting in October 2015 or at a mutually agreed date. Informal enquiries should be directed to Oliver Wild ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>).
