Hi Rui – this is very good as we have written the ATCA Standard to load onto this ISO 9001 system!  If you wanted to look at how you might adopt it, you are in a very good position.

Cheers, Lynne

Dear Rowdy and Lynne,

Just to let you know that being our Therapeutic Community Quinta das Lapas (Dianova Portugal) certified on quality management system ISO 9001:2008 since 2005, it is quite easy (well, somehow easy) to put in place a standardized quality TC project in common under the ISO normative that rules not only Europe but Internationally: same language, same standards, same policy, same methodology, same results.

Let us know if you would need any further information or assistance from Dianova regarding this matter.

Sounds very positive. A query for you. How different is the legislature of Australia and New Zealand. The major problem we face in Europe in instituting a quality standards project is the hugely differing legislation and of course different existing quality standards in many European countries. And of course the language thing - though that is surmountable.

I'm not sure whether the systems (laws and quality control frameworks) of Australia and New Zealand differed significantly when you started this process???  Same goes I suppose for the different states within Australia.

As you know, we wrote our Standards in 2 tiers – a push from the Government who funded it – but the first 6 indicators apply to all residential services and the next 7 (so all 13) to TCs.  This means that a resi rehab can also undertake the first 6 and this will give some assurance of quality at that level, and then they are encouraged to move to TC status by embracing the next 7 and being accepted as a TC. It is widening our membership base and most importantly, services in the community are recognising that it is in their interests to undertake the ATCA Standard as a sign of quality assurance for funding and residents.

We have also contracted with a group called Breaking New Ground – an NGO that provides a portal (you can access via our website) and which allows members to upload their journal as they go and to cross check against a range of standards.

We are very pleased with how its progressing.

Great news!  Well done ATCA and well done Goldbridge.  I’m currently working on a revised version of the TC manual I was commissioned to write for Phoenix Futures in the UK.  This time I’m writing something that is more generally applicable.

Hi everyone – agreed this is a danger. We have just had the first certification against the ATCA Standard conducted – with Goldbridge (Charlie Blatch the CEO) being the first to go through this process – and become certified against the Standard.  Important thing about this is that the ATCA Standard is registered with JAS-ANZ and as such is now picked up by external accrediting bodies but who must have a technical expert trained and appointed by the ATCA on their team.  We have been receiving a lot of enquiries from resi rehabs either calling themselves TCs and in some cases genuinely aspiring to be TCs – so now they are required to go through an audit process to achieve the ‘badge’ and certification as a TC.

It’s been a long time in the making – you know I presented on the ATCA Standard in Bali (WFTC) and Prague (EFTC) and the materials are now available on the ATCA website for download.  As such it is available freely now to our US and European colleagues as well as all others worldwide.  The actual certification in Australia is now undertaken by a body external to the ATCA.

Well done Goldbridge for being the first to go through this process!

Kind regards, Lynne

Thanks for that. It is a common problem. The main trade journal in the UK (Drink and Drugs News) issues a directory of residential rehabilitation services. Last year they listed 28 who had said they were TCs (many of them also said they were 12 step!!!!).  The truth is that the vast majority are not TCs (although they may include some elements of TC practice). It is - in my view - an area where we have failed badly to establish a more acute understanding within the field of the basic principles of the TC and a clear understanding that it is a complete and distinctive approach. It is this failure as much as anything that has seen the undermining of TCs through the introduction of additional and often unnecessary elements and a consequent erosion of the TC model - what George De Leon has called the failure to sustain fidelity to the TC model.

Rowdy-- I have no idea who is providing these services and that may be a clue as to whether they are really TCs.  Possibly provided by correctional staff-- which is always ineffective, or by a provider who really has no history of TC methodology (likely)--- in any case these attributions always hurt us
