Hi everyone – agreed this is a danger. We have just had the first certification against the ATCA Standard conducted – with Goldbridge (Charlie Blatch the CEO) being the first to go through this process – and become certified against the Standard.  Important thing about this is that the ATCA Standard is registered with JAS-ANZ and as such is now picked up by external accrediting bodies but who must have a technical expert trained and appointed by the ATCA on their team.  We have been receiving a lot of enquiries from resi rehabs either calling themselves TCs and in some cases genuinely aspiring to be TCs – so now they are required to go through an audit process to achieve the ‘badge’ and certification as a TC. 

 

It’s been a long time in the making – you know I presented on the ATCA Standard in Bali (WFTC) and Prague (EFTC) and the materials are now available on the ATCA website for download.  As such it is available freely now to our US and European colleagues as well as all others worldwide.  The actual certification in Australia is now undertaken by a body external to the ATCA.

 

Well done Goldbridge for being the first to go through this process!

Thanks for that. It is a common problem. The main trade journal in the UK (Drink and Drugs News) issues a directory of residential rehabilitation services. Last year they listed 28 who had said they were TCs (many of them also said they were 12 step!!!!).  The truth is that the vast majority are not TCs (although they may include some elements of TC practice). It is - in my view - an area where we have failed badly to establish a more acute understanding within the field of the basic principles of the TC and a clear understanding that it is a complete and distinctive approach. It is this failure as much as anything that has seen the undermining of TCs through the introduction of additional and often unnecessary elements and a consequent erosion of the TC model - what George De Leon has called the failure to sustain fidelity to the TC model.
