Job Advertisement: Closing Date 30th October 2015 Instrument Scientist / Astronomer Royal Observatory, Edinburgh Salary GBP 36,033 to GBP 38,426 STFC's UK Astronomy Technology Centre is the UK's centre for the design and production of world-leading astronomical telescopes, instruments and systems. We now have opportunities for enthusiastic astronomers to work with our engineers in the development and construction of astronomical instrumentation for major astronomical observatories. These roles are primarily in support of one of our major ongoing projects - instrumentation plans for the E-ELT, MIRI testing and calibration, studies of the SKA telescope manager and, in particular, the extragalactic / galaxy evolution aspects of VLT-MOONS. You will be expected to pursue your own research programme in an area reflecting the science priorities of the new instruments under development, including: galaxy evolution, star formation, stellar populations and planet / debris disks. A statement of your research interests should be included with your application. Suitable candidates will hold a PhD in Astronomy / Astrophysics. You will have experience with ground-based and/or space-borne astronomical instrumentation, along with a track record of published research in astronomy and/or astronomical instrumentation, and experience of scientific data analysis, modelling and problem-solving. You will possess a high degree of literacy with astronomical computing/software, along with the ability to write clear scientific/technical articles and reports.
