At this week’s joint BCS-SoC Conference in York, on Wednesday morning’s ‘Mapping Yorkshire’ session, a well-experienced ‘Cartographic Consultant’ – Giles Darkes – spoke and illustrated on his role as cartographic editor of ‘The British Historic Towns Atlas of York’.

Quite fortuitously, on Monday afternoon, the undersigned had called by one of the visit venues of the BCS Map Curators’ Group Workshop of a couple of years ago: the Archives/Local History section of what is now titled overall ‘York Explore’ (Explore York Learning Centre, Library Square YO1 7DS; [[log in to unmask]]). And was able to inform, after Giles’ talk, that York Explore’s programme September-December 2015 booklet announces one of its ‘Mint Yard Lectures’ – on 28th October – is due to be given on the above by the volume’s editor, Dr Peter Addyman. Publication (awaiting, Giles mentioned, confirmation of the cover/dust-jacket) is due this autumn; or, as the brochure states, “43 years after work first began”).

PS: Why the apparently same institution calls itself alternately ‘Explore York’ and/or ‘York Explore’ is, to me, a mystery (perhaps influenced by a medieval mystery play. . .)
