Issue 93 (Fall 2015), consisting of 80 pages, was published in late August 2015  and is in distribution to all paid subscribers and members in good standing of the Washington Map Society.  Copies are available for purchase.

 

MERVE ARKAN describes Italian siege maps of Cyprus. RYAN MOORE explores US Army mapping during World War I. ALEX JOHNSON and BARRY RUDERMAN trace the history surrounding a unique Native American map now in the collections of the Library of Congress. LEAH THOMAS describes the relationship between literature and early cartography of the Americas.  Several recent WMS events are summarized. Two books are reviewed. And there is more.

AUTHORS OF ARTICLES AND REVIEWS

 

MERVE SENEM ARKAN is a PhD student in her final year in the History of Cartography Department of Eötvös Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary, where she works under the supervision of Dr. Zsolt Török. Her current research interest is in urban maps of Cyprus between sixteenth to nineteenth centuries.

 

PETER DICKSON is the author of several books, including “The Magellan Myth:  Reflections on Columbus, Vespucci and the Waldseemueller Map of 1507” (Second Edition 2009) which includes a chapter offering the first in-depth review of previous scholarship concerning the Lenox globe

 

DENNIS GURTZ, a long time collector of maps and prints of Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia, is a past president of the Washington Map Society. 

 

JOHN HESSLER is Curator, J.I. Kislak Collection of the Archaeology of the Early Americas and Specialist in Modern Cartography and Geographic Information Sciences, Geography and Map Division, Library of Congress Washington, DC.

 

ALEXANDER JOHNSON is the co-proprietor of Antiquariat Daša Pahor (www.pahor.de), a specialist dealer in antiquarian maps. He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Exeter, England. 

 

BERT JOHNSON is a past president of WMS who writes often about the cartography of Greece and the Mediterranean. 

JOEL KOVARSKY, proprietor of The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books, is the author of the 2014 book “The True Geography of Our Country: Jefferson's Cartographic Vision.”

LEIGH LOCKWOOD is Webmaster of the WMS, and a frequent contributor to “The Portolan.”

 

J.C. McELVEEN is past president of the Washington Map Society.

 

HAROLD MEINHEIT is a former American diplomat with wide experience in Asia.  A regular contributor to “The Portolan”, he is also secretary of the Washington Map Society.  

 

STEFAAN MISSINNE, PhD, is the author of “A Newly Discovered Early Sixteenth-Century Globe Engraved on an Ostrich Egg: The Earliest Surviving Globe Showing the New World” which appeared in “The Portolan”, Issue 87 (Fall 2013).

 

RYAN MOORE is a Cartographic Specialist at the Geography & Map Division of the Library of Congress. He has an interest in maps from World War I and maps of Korea.

 

RICHARD PFLEDERER, a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of “The Portolan,” is a frequent contributor to the journal.  He is the author of several reference books on the subject of Portolan charts, the latest “Finding Their Way at Sea: the Story of Portolan Charts, the Cartographers who Drew Them and the Mariners who Sailed by Them.”

 

BARRY RUDERMAN is the owner of Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps -- RareMaps.com -- located in La Jolla, California.

 

THOMAS SANDER is editor of “The Portolan”.

 

LEAH MICHELLE THOMAS, former Senior Maps Cataloger and Cataloging Coordinator at The Library of Virginia, is Assistant Professor of English at Virginia State University in Petersburg.  She earned her PhD in the interdisciplinary program Media, Art, & Text at Virginia Commonwealth University.
