Dear all,

The Section 3.2 “Geomechanics and Rheology” of the GFZ Potsdam (Germany) is opening a position in the project “Influence of Heterogeneities on the Initiation of Shear Zones in the Ductile Regime”, funded by the German Science Foundation -  Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) for 2+1 years.

The successful candidate will perform high temperature/high pressure deformation experiments in Paterson gas medium triaxial and torsion apparatuses. Microstructural analyses of the deformed samples will be performed under optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Quantification of crystallographic preferred orientations (CPO) will be conducted by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The experimental results will be compared with natural shear zones.

Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in geology or geophysics, with strong background in structural geology and rock mechanics. Expertise in experimental deformation of rocks and microstructural analyses will be considered as an advantage, but not a necessity for the application. The ability and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment and a fluent knowledge of the English language are required.

Informal enquiries about the project can be addressed to myself ([log in to unmask]) or Erik Rybacki ([log in to unmask]).

Please submit your application by 31th October 2015 quoting the reference no. 73/32/15 D via email to [log in to unmask]. Please combine your application documents into a single PDF file with a size of up to 3 megabytes. Only applications submitted to this email will be considered

The official advertisement is also attached.

Thank you very much and best wishes,

Luiz
