The Section 3.2 “Geomechanics and
Rheology” of the GFZ Potsdam (Germany) is opening a position in the project “Influence of
Heterogeneities on the Initiation of Shear Zones in the Ductile Regime”, funded
by the German Science Foundation - Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) for
2+1 years.
The
successful candidate will perform high temperature/high pressure deformation
experiments in Paterson gas medium triaxial and torsion apparatuses. Microstructural analyses of
the deformed samples will be performed under optical, scanning and transmission
electron microscopy. Quantification of crystallographic preferred orientations
(CPO) will be conducted by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The
experimental results will be compared with natural shear zones.
Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in
geology or geophysics, with strong background in structural geology and rock
mechanics. Expertise in experimental deformation of rocks and microstructural
analyses will be considered as an advantage, but not a necessity for the
application. The ability and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and
international environment and a fluent knowledge of the English language are
required.
