Hi John,
I've downloaded the app and given it a spin. It would be wondeful to have something like that as a shell into which we could put our own content. I'm reading the blog now and I've also emailed Qrarbox to inquire about cost and ease of use.

Thanks again to everyone. I can feel a project emerging here for our museum. ;-)

Best Wishes,
Nick

Hi all,

Though I may be wrong, I think that the Science Museum are using iBeacon technology in their Information Age Galleries, including to enable self-directed visits by visually impaired visitors; I think VocalEyes are also looking at this sort of thing.

Hi Mary,

Thank you so much for your kind thought and reply. I'm constantly amazed at how useful and full of ideas the GEM list is. I listen in and learn all sorts. And the odd time I make a request, I've been really surprised and grateful for how willing people are to try and help. Thanks to you and everyone on this list. I'm going to look into these ideas and maybe find out how much/easy qraqrbox is. I'll let you know what I discover.

Best Wishes,

Nick

Dear Olivia

Qraqrbox might be worth looking into.  It's been developed by computer scientists at the University of St Andrews to deliver content to all types of mobile devices in areas where there's no web connection or mobile signal.  It's been designed in partnership with Historic Scotland specifically for providing information at unstaffed sites in remote locations.

I don't know too much about it, but it sounds like it might be something to investigate further.  www.qraqrbox.com

Yours,

Matt

Hi all,

Apologies for cross posting, but I'm looking for some help.

I'm working on a project where we have a small heritage building in a semi remote location.  Unfortunately it's only open a couple of afternoon's per week during the summer season and we're hoping to provide visitors who make the journey outside the opening time with some information that they can access via mobile devices.

Consequently I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some case studies/examples of using iBeacons to reveal information or AV guides that could be downloaded and used on visitors' own devices when outside the building?

One challenge that we have is a lack of mobile network coverage!

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Olivia
