Beginner’s Guide to Cataloguing:
AACR2 and MARC21 basics
Date:
6 November 2015, 10.00am-4.00pm (registration 9.30-10.00am)
Venue:
National Portrait Gallery, St Martin's Place, London WC2H 0HE
The ARLIS/UK & Ireland Cataloguing and Classification Committee have organized a basic cataloguing training day for those with limited or no past experience in library cataloguing.
Are you a student, recent graduate, paraprofessional or solo practitioner? Are you looking to add cataloguing to your skills? Would you like to know how catalogue records function? If so, come along and find out the importance of good cataloguing
practices.
This training will focus on records created according to AACR2 in the MARC21 format. Although RDA is the new cataloguing standard in use by many libraries and cataloguing agencies, AACR2 is still being widely used and is the standard underlying
millions of extant bibliographic records in active use by the international library community.
During the workshop, we will explore the structure and importance of these standards, and show you how to create basic descriptive cataloguing records, including access points, with plenty of time for practical exercises. By the end of
the day, delegates will have a clearer understanding of library catalogue records and will be able to create a simple record for a monograph.
