The School of Mathematics invites applications for one or more Research Fellowships in the area of Internet data analysis for cybersecurity applications.

 

This is an exciting new area of research which involves large-scale mathematical modelling of hosts, traffic and networks for tracking and prediction of botnets and other malicious entities. We invite strong applicants with expertise in any area of computational statistics, time series, complex networks, information theory, machine learning or algorithms. Some knowledge of operating systems and Internet protocols would be an advantage but are not essential for the post. You will have the opportunity to work with government experts on real operational problems. 

 

This research involves use of distributed data on computing clusters (so-called 'Big Data'). While prior experience of cluster computing is not essential, the successful applicant will be expected to learn about this area. Programming experience (e.g. in Python, C, Java) and an interest in implementation would be an advantage.

 

The post will be based in Bristol. Significant salary enhancements may be offered if the applicant has particularly relevant skills and/or postgraduate experience.

 

Due to the nature of the Heilbronn Institute's work, the appointment will require security vetting. Resident UK nationals will normally be able to meet this condition; other potential applicants should consult the Director about their eligibility before applying. You may become a member of the USS pension scheme. Research expenses of at least £2,000 per annum will also be available.

 

There is a salary supplement of £3.5K pa, in recognition of the distinctive nature of these Fellowships. Payment of this supplement is conditional on a finished thesis having been accepted in final form, because we expect Heilbronn Fellows to hold PhDs before working at the Heilbronn Institute.
