I read different papers and I am confused about the definition of voxel in fMRI. E.g. In many papers like Cox and Savoy 2003 told that a 21 slice 64*64 matrix volume contains 86,016 voxels = 21*4096. It means every value in the matrix is showing one voxel. In short e.g. in a 3*3 matrix has 9 voxels.  

In another paper, Sanne Sochoenmakers 2013, showing a lot of values with in a single voxel. Can you please tell me exact definition of voxel with respect to fMRI.
