Dear All

Science in Radstock (SiR) is a monthly lecture series which runs through the winter and spring in Radstock, about 10 miles south of Bath in North-East Somerset. SiR was started about ten years ago by the British Science Association, and is now run by volunteers from the friends of Radstock Museum. Most SiR events take place in the museum (radstockmuseum.co.uk), although sometimes another venue in the town has to be used if the audience is likely to be bigger than the museum can accommodate.

Events attract an audience of 40-50 people, with an age range from teens to 70+, but on average about half the audience are retired people.

There is absolutely no restriction on the subject matter of presentations to SiR. If you can be entertaining and informative for about an hour on any STEM topic, and are willing to travel to Radstock on a tuesday evening (7:30 pm start) for an audience then the organisers will be delighted to hear from you. Previous speakers have covered everything from the origins of the universe to orchid conservation, the life of Thomas Newcomen and new ideas on road traffic management. SiR has had everyone from nationally famous professors to new postgrads (and some school students, too) to speak so fame or otherwise is absolutely no barrier to speaking in Radstock.

In particular with a friendly and appreciative audience used to an eclectic programme SiR is an ideal starting point for anyone wanting to get experience at communicating their work to the general public. But of course, old hands are welcome, too.

If you think you’ve got something interesting to say about any STEM topic, or you know someone who has, there’s an audience waiting in Radstock. Don’t be shy, get in touch , and you’ll be assured of a warm welcome in Somerset.

Please reply to me, not to the whole list: [log in to unmask], and I’ll forward your details to the organisers.

Thanks

Richard.
