medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thank you so much, Paul, for writing. The three texts you suggested are, indeed, helpful!

I'm not sure if any of these touch directly on the Litany, but they should be worth checking for general background and further bibliography:

Caroline Walker Bynum, "The Blood of Christ in the Later Middle Ages", Church History 71 (2002): 685-714.

Caroline Walker Bynum, Wonderful Blood : Theology and Practice in Late Medieval Northern Germany and Beyond (2007).

Nicholas Vincent, The Holy Blood : King Henry III and the Westminster Blood Relic (2001).

Dear List,

I thought I would consult the considerable collective intellect and bibliographic expertise of the List to ask if anyone had any leads on the history of the Litany of the Most Precious Blood, which was officially sanctioned only in 1960, by John XXIII, but appears to have a history dating back to the 13thC (according to one source).  The late apologist and Physics professor Stanley Jaki, OSB, seems to have written a history of the litany, which a blog post of his from 2009 claims he will include in the introduction to his commentary on each of the 24 invocations.  I can't seem to find at any library a copy of Jaki's book (published by Realview Books, a press Jaki started), and I'd rather not purchase a copy sight unseen.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to historical material, primary source texts, or even secondary texts that might help me construct a history for the Litany?  Even historical background on the devotion to the Most Precious Blood and the medieval cult of Christ's blood would be appreciated!

Best,
Joel
