medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I once taught  the Song of Songs as a guest lecturer (one day only) in a course called Masterpieces of Love. To contextualize the text I used stories of love from the Bible (Jonathan and David, Ruth and Naomi, etc.) but I moved on to recordings of the Song of Songs (medieval and modern). The students were thus exposed to multiple artistic interpretations of the SoS before we started a class discussion.

You may find helpful commentaries on the SoS in Targum of S of S. Cf. Saadiah Gaon, Rashi , Samuel ben Meir, Abraham ibn Ezra . See The Cambridge History of the Bible 3.8-9. Luther, Calvin and Castellio wrote commentaries on it.

Steve,

I've never read courses at the US universities. I love and use Ann Matter's book on medieval exegesis of the Song of Songs:

I teach an undergraduate course on medieval theology. I would like to teach a class or two on the interpretation of the Songs of Songs in this class. If you teach on this subject matter, what text/s does you use? Is there an article or a chapter on the interpretation of the Song of Songs that would be good for undergraduates?

Thanks!
