I've had a lot of enquiries about this, so rather than send the details to each of you I thought I'd summarise them here. One useful resource is BARB, Broadcasting Audience Research Board. There are headline figures available on their website, but apparently more detailed information can be obtained via the BFI library. Their records only go back as far as 1981, however.

For older programmes a good source is The BBC Daily Viewing Barometer - available at the BBC Written Archives Centre in Caversham.

For more specific information about the viewing figures for Abigail's Party, Lez Cooke very helpfully pointed me towards the new edition of his excellent book 'British TV Drama: A History', which contains a footnote on exactly this topic.

Hope this is helpful.

With all best wishes
Ruth
