Thanks all for your input. I see that the tuning page has quite a few new (to me) tuning tips and is a good place to start. Jens' tip on trying to gauge the mysql performance might be interesting too. A dpm-dbck is on the old to-do list, I don't see how it could do any harm. I presume there's not a --screwoverDB option? It could be that my sysadmin senses are tingling over nothing, and observation bias is making me see patterns in failures that just aren't there.
